Two decades ago, on July 4, 1990, I traveled on a plane from Mumbai to Kansas City, in the heart of the U.S. Midwest, to take my first job in information technology. Many of you will remember the early nineties as the hay days of technology. We thought everything was possible – we worked long hours and we dreamed in code.

In many ways, we can now say that we realized our dreams and lived our passion in making life easy with the use of rapid growth of technology. Technology written by programmers of decades past and enhanced by programmers today, fuels the global economy. Nearly everything we do is somehow connected to the infrastructures established two decades ago and relished massive improvement over the technology blocks of yester years. Today’s programmers and IT professionals, continue to expand upon those original dreams.

But the growth spurts of the 1990s did more than just spread the potency of technology into every business sector. They also changed the face of how and where people work. When the first Indian programmers, in 1965, traveled from Mumbai, Delhi and Calcutta to New York, California and, yes, even Kansas, it was a major event in their lives and the lives of their families. To some extent, it was the same kind of experience for the immigrant professionals in the 1990s.

Most of us were still used to staying in the area where we grew up, in maintaining residency in our native lands. The ones that left were cowboys. We were explorers in new lands. Well, more specifically, one land. In those days, the U.S. beckoned; this was where all opportunities lay. Although today’s world is flat, making connectivity accessible and faster with the advent in technology giving rise to the glorious concept of ‘virtual teams’ across globe. We still cannot replace the aura of personally commuting to different geographies and shaking hands, be it business, tourism, education or healthcare.

Umesh has more than 19 years of proven senior technology and management experience in the software industry. He founded INSZoom in 1999. As CEO of INSZoom, Umesh managed the company’s dramatic growth from a software start-up to the premier immigration case management software vendor and the largest independent software company in the immigration software industry. He earned a B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering from B.V.B. College of Engineering and Technology, Karnataka

University. Soon after graduating, he worked for a leading software technology company in Mumbai, India. He emigrated to the U.S., fittingly, on July 4th, 1990, as a member of a team working at U.S. Sprint in Kansas City, and has, since that day, worked diligently in various aspects of the technology industry.

According to recent LinkedIn data, CEO of INSZoom was in the top 1 percent of most viewed profiles on the business social media site.

Umesh Vaidyamath, INSZoom’s founder & CEO was lauded by the leading connectivity organization for their popularity among business browsers. LinkedIn now has 200 million members worldwide.

The U.S Custom and Border Protection (CBP) on March 27, 2013 published an interim final rule to automate the form I-94 (Arrival and Departure record). Currently, aliens entering the United States are required to fill the form I-94 at the time of entry into the US and show subsequently to prove their legal presence in the US.

The proposed rule that is slated to tentatively go into effect in the last week of April, will allow for the information entered by or on behalf of the traveller on the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) at the time of checking in. The information collected by the APIS has the information required on a form I-94.

With the implementation of the rule, the CBP will create electronic I-94 records for aliens entering the United States by air or sea (with some exceptions) that travellers will be able to print off the net on a website expected to be active by April 20, 2013.

This change does bring in a completely new dimension to the way things have traditionally operated. Recognizing this the CBP has clarified that a print out from the website of the travellers arrival and departure record will be an acceptable document amongst others to:

  • Prove legal presence in the US
  • Apply for a Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9) process
  • Apply for a Driver’s License and other Immigration benefits
  • Create Rental Agreements (should it be required)
  • Securing School Admissions
  • Presenting to a University to verify Eligibility for Enrollment.

The benefits of this change are manifold. Right from the huge amount of money saved, reduction in paperwork involved, time spent, and ease of verification of an alien’s legal status in the US. The digitization of the I-94 form should make life easier for officials as well as aliens.

However, as is with every new process, till such time the new process stabilizes it is recommended that aliens keep a copy of the printout with them so that they can prove their legal status to concerned officials as and when required.
